Operator.

operator is a short set in a fire station call centre, the plot is centred around one conversation between an operator and a mother who is trapped in a fire with her son. on the whole I found the film very interesting; the cinematography was fairly simple in the main conversation, close ups to show the emotion of the operator, and we never see the woman from the burning house however the dialogue is very clever in that it moves the narrative on as well as creating strong imagery - by the end of the film I realised that I had not focused on the actual mise-en-scene that much and instead was thinking about the mental image of the burning house. I think that all of this is clever because it very much puts us into the operators shoes;
we know as much as she does, we feel for the woman in the fire as she clearly does but we are also very detached and when the call ends we get an anti-climax and a feeling of loss almost due to gaining an emotional attachment to the woman. There is a moment of white noise to reinforce this feeling of loss before the phone rings again - the film ends and we imagine she goes through this again maybe multiple times in a day.
I found the film very interesting in that it managed to show two scenarios and narratives in such a short amount of time and through dialogue rather than actually showing it on screen showed a very difficult scene to film.

  1. Could you be influenced by the style of this film? or the genre? It is so tense!
